Cashgate updates: Mphwiyo’s case to start on November 1

Former Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo will appear in court on November 1 2016 in case where he is being accused of defrauding government money amounting to K2.4 billion.

State Prosecutor in the Officer of Director of Public Prosecution confirmed of the development in an interview with the press, saying all is ready for the case.

According to the information gathered from the office, the case delayed because of the just concluded Mphwiyo’s shooting case which saw former Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs being sent to 14 years jail sentence for conspiracy.

On his part, Mphwiyo’s lawyer on the case could not confirm as to whether his client will be available for the case or not.

Mphwiyo is together with three other suspects Auzius Kazombo Mwale, Clemence Mmadzi and Roosevelt Ndovi charged with seven counts.

According to the state prosecutor, Mphwiyo, David Kandoje, Kazombo Mwale, Mmadzi, George Banda, Michela Mphatso, Samuel Mzanda and Maxwell Namata are facing charges of fraud, negligence by public office, money laundering, theft by public servant, theft by servant and conspiracy to defraud government amounting to K2 446 817 450.49.

Mphwiyo’s shooting on September 13 2013 at his residence in Lilongwe led to the revelations of massive plunder of public funds at Capitol Hill during the reign of Dr. Joyce Banda.
