Chiefs in Nsanje against Chakuamba’s burial site

As Malawians countrywide are mourning the untimely departure of veteran Politian Gwanda Chakuamba, Chiefs in Nsanje and Chikwawa have vehemently protested government choice of a place where the legend will be buried.

On Tuesday government through Ministry of Information and Communications Technology released a funeral programme of Chakuamba indicating that the legend will be buried at his home village Chinyanje, Traditional Authority Mulolo in Nsanje.

The Minister said the choice of Chakuamba’s burial site has been done by the family.

“The Chakuamba family has advised that the burial ceremony will take place on Friday, 28th October 2016 from noon at Chinyanje village, Traditional Authority Mulolo in Nsanje District,” reads the statement in part.

But the news has not pleased chiefs in Nsanje, saying Chakuamba was the pillar of nsanje as a whole and is supposed to be buried at the Boma where he started his political journey.

Senior Chief Malemia told the press on Tuesday afternoon that late Chakwamba who died at the age of 82 advised that his remains be buried at the district headquarters where his political career began.

On the other hand Traditional Authority Mlilima of Chikwawa wants Mbuya buried near Kamuzu.

Meanwhile Chakuamba’s body has been taken from College of Medicine in Blantyre and is now at Comesa Hall for body viewing.
