MZUNI students to hold national wide demonstrations

Students from Mzuzu University (MZUNI) have given President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika who is also the college Chancellor a 10 days ultimatum to address the challenges which have led to the closure of the institution or face national wide demonstrations.

Mzuni was closed earlier this month following a strike by lectures and support staff at the college who are demanding 35 percent salary hike.

The strike by lecturers has seen the management delaying the graduation ceremony which was scheduled for this month.

In a statement released on November 11, 2016 seen by FaceofMalawi reporter, Mzuzu University students Union Representative Council (MUSREC) said the college’s closure has affected them badly and pleaded with Mutharika to intervene on the matter.

MUSREC also asked the Minister of Education Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano to stop a blame game on the matter.

“Mzuzu University should be reopened by 20th November,2016.

“If the above demands are not addressed within stipulated period, MUSREC will embark on national wide demonstrations involving all students who were supposed to graduate this year, all continuing students, Open and Distance Learning students, parents and all
responsible citizens to meet in major cities of this country,” reads in part the statement.

MUSREC said the demonstrations will be followed by a vigil at parliament building in Lilongwe until their demands are respected.
