Chief Chamba elevated to senior Chief

Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development elevated Eliot Golden Tambala from Chief Chamba to a status of a senior chief in recognition to his development consciousness.

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa presided over the elevation of Chamba at Chikala Primary School on Tuesday.

He said government elevates chiefs based on two major grounds, dedication to development work and promotion of stability in their respective areas.

Nankhumwa said Chamba was elevated to a senior position due to his ability in mobilizing his subjects to participate actively in development work and for promoting stability among his subordinates and subjects.

Chamba area has seen a number of community initiated projects such as school blocks, bridges, roads, irrigation schemes construction among others.

Twenty metres from Chamba’s Chikala headquarters is a newly constructed maternity wing which is expected to improve maternal health.

Chamba has enjoyed a cordial relationship with his subordinates, members of parliament and ward councils as no misunderstandings has been reported to District Commissioner’s office.

The area has a vibrant community based policing such that Chamba area has not registered any abduction and killings of people with albinism since the abductions and killings started in the district in 2015.

The Minister called on the newly elevated chief to continue discharging his duties in line with government development agenda and in the interest of his subjects saying government’s efforts is to eradicate poverty.

He noted that some chiefs in the country indulge in corrupt and other malpractices that negatively affect MASAF public works projects which have safety net components such cash for work.

Nankhumwa said government will not accept such trends as it will allow the law to take its course.

Machinga has a population of over 500,000 and has 16 chiefs as four namely Nyambi, Kawinga, Liwonde and the newly elevated Chamba are senior chiefs.
Ten are full chiefs while two are sub chiefs.

The district has seven constituencies and 14 wards represented in the full council.
