DPP against newly registered party DEPECO, obtains injunction

As pressure continues to mount on President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika ahead of the forthcoming 2019 general elections, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has obtained injunction against the newly registered party Democratic Progressive Congress (Depeco).

Judiciary Spokesperson Mlenga Mvula confirmed of the development in an interview with one of the privately owned radio-Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) Wednesday.

According to Mvula, the ruling DPP feels that the name resemble to that of the DPP and MCP so too are their symbols.

The DPP use a maize cob (christened as Chaponda) as its symbol while the new party has a shrub like a maize cob as a symbol.

Mvula said the matter will go for a judicial review next week when the DPP and the new party will battle it out in the Lilongwe High Court.

The court case comes at a time when the ruling DPP is facing strong opposition from Malawians on the recent Maize gate scandal involving the suspended Minister of agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Dr. George Chaponda and ADMARC.

ADMARC is being accused of buying maize from Zambia at an exorbitant price due to the use of middlemen, Kaloswe Limited.
