Members of parliament (MPs) have threatens to boycott the mid-year budget review meeting scheduled to start on Monday next week over failure by government to release fuel allowances, FaceofMalawi can reveal.
Information sourced by FaceofMalawi indicates that that the Treasury is yet to release funds to Parliament for the MPs allowances.
Chairperson for the Social Welfare Committee of Parliament Alex Major who is also MP for Kasungu West confirmed of the development in an interview with the press, saying the development has affected them greatly.
“I can confirm that we are yet to be given the sitting and fuel allowances for the forthcoming session of Parliament and the MPs have resolved not to report to Parliament up until the allowances are given to us,” said Major.
While confirming the development, National Assembly Spokesperson Leonard Mengezi urged the MPs to report to Parliament, saying the allowances will be given to them on Monday.
Mengezi said it is too early for the MPs to start complaining of the allowances.
