Three people arrested for stealing 600 bags of fertilizer belonging to Optichem Company

Police in Blantyre are keeping in custody three men suspected of stealing 600 bags of fertilizer belonging to Optichem Company.

The fertilizer worth 12.5 million and was loaded in a truck which was coming from Mozambique.

Country Manager, Geoffrey Amidu for Drum Commodities Limited whose company monitors stock on behalf of a bank where Optichem borrowed money to buy the fertilizer.

He told the Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Wednesday that on January 27,2017 he received a call from one of the staff members that there is a track that has been cleared on the weigh bridge but has not offloaded the fertilizer at Optichem.

“I rushed to Optichem to where I met the warehouse manager who told me that one of your staff members has prepared these documents that say that we have offloaded a truck of fertilizer here but if we look at the list of the trucks that have offloaded it is not on the list” Amidu said.

The three suspects are Mayeso Patrick Mgala, 26, Mattias Jere, 35 and Isaki Bwanali.

Confirming the development, senior superintendent Carolyn Jere who is Station Manager for Soche Police told MANA that they received the complaint that a 30 tonnes truck carrying the fertilizer which was coming from Mozambique has been diverted to an unknown place

Soon after receiving the complaint they started their investigations and they managed to arrest the three suspects.

They firstly arrested the driver Jere who led them to Mgala who received the 600 bags of fertilizer who later led them to Dedza where they arrested the third suspect Bwanali who bought the fertilizer

So far police have recovered 590 bags of fertilizer and they are still looking for the other suspects because they believe it is a case that involves a group of people.

Currently, the police have advised companies who transport fertilizer to make sure that they employ people who are trustworthy because the fertilizer is needed by a lot of people considering that this is the rainy season.

Jere comes from Zakaliya Village Traditional Authority TA Simulemba in Kasungu district. Mgala comes from Kasalika Village TA Chimaliro in Thyolo and Bwanali is from Kademera Village TA Kaphuka in Dedza-mana
