33 people arrested for torching police vehicle

Police in Lilongwe have arrested 33 people in connection with a fracas that occurred at Kaphiri in Lilongwe yesterday.

The people were baying for the blood of a man suspected to have killed a bicycle taxi (kabaza) operator.

Police in Lilongwe have confirmed of the development in an interview with the press, saying investigations are under way.

According to the police, the angry mob stormed Chitsime police unit and also set ablaze a police anti-riot vehicle (Chimbaula) in the pandemonium that ensued.

It is said that the police vehicle run out of fuel during the fracas and the angry mob took the advantage of the situation to torch it.

Meanwhile central region police commissioner has been transferred to Zomba Police College over the fracas.
