Eight sentenced to 18 Months Imprisonment for Breaking Into Shops Belonging to Burundians

Dedza First Grade Magistrate Court on Monday sentenced 8 people to 18 months imprisonment or in default K100, 000 for committing theft.

The Court heard through State Prosecutor Sub Inspector Bauleni Namasani that the eight broke into three shops at Bembeke Trading Centre belonging to Burundians.

“On March 26, 2017 some people broke the shops of foreigners at Lizulu so these people took advantage of the situation at Lizulu to attack shops at Bembeke,” he told the court.

Confirming the development, Dedza Police Public Relations Officer Edward Kabango said the shops belonged to Emmanuel Kubwino, Eliezer Muhoza, Faith John and the thieves went away with assorted groceries.

“The police managed to recover the stolen items and arrested the eight who all pleaded guilty,” he said.

The eight are; Amunawa Eneya 20, Dorica Damazio 35, Emily Kanjoka 20, all from Chimlambe Village Traditional Authority (TA) Kamenyagwaza, Elia Chimkwita, 20, from Mkutu Village, Edina Kadzuwa, 41, from Kalilombe Village all in the area of TA Kamenyagwaza, Laness Kamwendo, 30, from Siliya Village in the area of TA Kachere in Dedza and Blessings Nguluwe, 35, from Mankhangala Village in TA Mnyanga in Kasungu.

Kabango said the suspects pleaded with the Court for leniency saying they did not know what they were doing.

First Grade Magistrate Annet Banda said the people needed a stiff punishment to deter other would be offenders determining that they spend 18 months in prison or pay a K100, 000 fine each.

Currently the eight are in police custody since none paid the fine.
