Jeffrey wa Jeffrey tribalism remarks attract criticism: DPP refuses to apologize to northerners

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has trashed calls by some quarters asking the party to apologize to the people of the northern region over reckless remarks uttered by its Secretary General Greselder Jeffrey that the north like the center will never rule the country.

On Saturday during a political rally held at Karonga Freedom Park, the DPP SG said northern region will not produce the country’s President and that they will remain hand clappers for a leader from the South.

The remarks attracted debate among Malawians with others asking for an apology from Jeffrey wa Jeffrey.

Speaking in an interview with the press, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera expressed sadness of the remarks.

“I have heard that a senior DPP member said the north will never produce a state president. These are unfortunate words to Malawians who were already preached to about unity during MCP regime. Leaders are not subjected to one region. Therefore, such remarks should be reverted,” Chakwera said.

Concurring with Chakwera’s remarks, Human Right Activist Billy Mayaya called for the immediate firing of Jeffrey wa Jeffrey.

Mayaya went further by asking the ruling party to apologize on the matter.

Reacting to the call, DPP spokesperson Francis Kasaila said the party will not apologize to the people of the northern region.

Kasaila accused those people asking for an apology, saying they want to use the issue to tarnish the good image of the part.

Meanwhile Livingstonia Synod is planning of suing Jeffrey wa Jeffrey.
