Armed thief is battling for his life at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) in the commercial capital Blantyre after being shot on the stomach by police officers in Limbe Township.
According to information sourced by Faceofmalawi reporter, the suspect identified as Richard Gaza attacked a CID officer D/Sgt Owen Msiska who was passing by Bluebird Street.
The suspect demanded a cellphone while threatening to hack the police officer if he refuses the order.
“The criminal produced a big knife and hacked the detective on left arm and back sustaining big cuts. As the officer shouted for help, officers on patrols around Bluebird heard the cry and advanced to assist
“The criminal attempted to escape and charged again towards the police officers,” reads in part the statement.
Added the statement: “After firing in the air, No. B5637 Constable Liwonde shot the criminal in the stomach rendering him unconscious.”
Both the police officer and the criminal were immediately taken to Queens for medical attention.
The police officer has been treated as out patient while the criminal is critical in the theatre.
