Police Nab an AK-47 Robber in Phalombe

A 34-year-old man in Phalombe has been nabbed by police after being suspected that he was robbing of people in the district using his AK47 gun.

It is suspected that the man, Kondwani George was among the robbers who on the night of 17^th June broke into the house of a business man known as Leston Gogoda at Chiringa Trading Centre in the district and went away with Mk2.8 million.

Among other things, the robbers also managed to escape with TNM and Airtel airtime as well as Movitel of Mozambique wealth Mk 300,000.00.

Phalombe police spokesperson, Augustus Nkhwazi said there were two other people at the house who knew the businessman had such a huge amount of money kept in the house and disclosed to the robbers after being threatened.

“The only people who knew that such money was in Gogoda’s house were his wife and brother in-law and he wanted to use it to buy a maize mill,” said Nkhwazi.

The business man luckily recognized one of the robbers that led to the arrest of George after Chiringa police officers launched a search.

Answering the charges, George pleaded not guilty but the state paraded witnesses to testify against him.

Further police investigation found that the suspect had in possession an AK47 gun that he must have obtained from his relative who was once a RENAMO soldier in Mozambique.

Meanwhile, George is being kept in police custody and expected to appear in court Thursday to defend himself from witnesses waiting to testify against him.

He hails from Mangani village, Tradional Authority Nazombe in Phalombe.
