ACB to request for new date for the hearing of Chaponda’s maize-gate case

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is scheduled to file for a new date in the maize-gate case involving former Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Dr. George Chaponda.

ACB arrested Chaponda together with businessman Rashid Tayub and businesswoman Grace Mijiga Mhango of a locally registered Grain Traders and Processors Association of Malawi (GTPA).

The case was scheduled to commence on August 9 and 10 but the case failed to start due to strike by Judiciary support staff over housing allowance and the strike was called on Wednesday.

Speaking in an interview with the press on Wednesday, ACB Deputy Director said the anti-grafting busting body will file to court an application for the judiciary to set up a new date for the hearing of the case.

However he admitted that the strike by Judiciary support staff has affected them in terms of preparations.
