DPP offers to help police in arresting JB

The office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has offered to help the Malawi Police Service (MPS) in bringing home former President Dr. Joyce Banda from self imposed exile to answer a case in the ongoing investigation into cashgate scandal.

DPP’s Spokesperson Apoche Itimu said this in an interview with the press on Tuesday.

In a statement released on Monday, National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera said the police have proved beyond reasonable doubt that Banda has a hand on the scandal.

“The Malawi Police Service wishes to inform Malawians that its Fiscal and Fraud Section conducted some investigations on the suspected involvement of the former president in ‘Cashgate’ cases and unearthed credible evidence.

“The veidence gathered raises reasonable suspicion that the former president committed offences relating to abuse of office and money laundering,” reads a statement by Police.

Police said they are interested to question Banda on the suspected offences hence the issuing of a warrant of arrest to Banda, who is self-imposed exile.

“This warrant of arrest is in force and necessary legal formalities are being pursued,” the Police statement said.

Meanwhile Banda has said she is ready to hand herself to police she is served with the warrant of arrest.
