Former President Dr. Joyce Banda has reacted to the warrant of arrest obtained by the Malawi Police Service, saying she is ready to hand herself to police once she sees the order.

Banda’s spokesperson Andekuche Chanthunya said this in an interview with the press on Monday after the police released a statement on the matter.

Chanthunya said the office of the former President is yet to receive the warrant of arrest but Banda is ready to cooperate with the Malawi Police whenever they want to arrest her.

In a statement issued on Monday, National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera said the police Banda is suspected of abusing her office in the Cashgate affair.

“The Malawi Police Service wishes to inform Malawians that its Fiscal and Fraud Section conducted some investigations on the suspected involvement of the former president in ‘Cashgate’ cases and unearthed credible evidence.

“The veidence gathered raises reasonable suspicion that the former president committed offences relating to abuse of office and money laundering,” reads a statement by Police.

Police said they are interested to question Banda on the suspected offences hence the issuing of a warrant of arrest to Banda, who is self-imposed exile.

Kadadzera the police have also informed the International Police (Interpo) to help is searching for former President.

Banda left the country just after the May 20, 2014 tripartite election.
