Several People Buried Alive After a Rubbish Dump Collapsed in Guinea

Five people, including two children have died in Guinea after a rubbish dump on the outskirts of the capital, Conakry collapsed following a heavy rainfall.

The incident happened on Tuesday and the bodies were taken to a morgue in Conakry while a dozen of others who sustained injuries were rushed to the hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.

“The rubbish fell onto three homes,” said Kasse, the police commissioner for Conakry.

“There are still many people buried, and we have to do everything possible to save them. We have to get diggers in. Access to the area is very difficult.”

Police deployed in the area in large numbers as rescue teams strove to look for survivors, the AFP reporter said. Two people were brought out alive.

The government of the West African country said in a statement that rescue operations were “under way”.

“On this sad occasion, the government addresses its deepest condolences to the victims’ families,” the statement added.

This incident has happened eight days after a mudslide and flooding struck the neighbouring country of Sierra Leone, killing nearly 500 people.
