Veteran actor Smart Likhaya Mbewe ‘Mbwiye’ rested

Minister of Information and Communications Technology Nicholas Dausi led thousands of Malawians in paying last respect to veteran actor Smart Likhaya Mbewe, popularly known as Kapalepale who was laid to rest on Sunday.

Mbewe also known as ‘Mbwiye’ died of High blood pressure on Friday evening at Mulanje District Hospital.

In his speech, Dausi described Mbwiye as a fine man full of talent.

On his part, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director General Aubrey Sumbuleta described Smart Likhaya Mbewe as a product of hard working who was accomodating views from people of all ages.

“We pray that God the almighty provides comfort and solace to the entire Likhaya family and MBC colleagues during this difficult time of the loss of the veteran radio dramatist,” said Sumbuleta.

Born on 10th October 1934, the late Mr. Likhaya Mbewe was one of the pioneers of Radio drama in Malawi.

He joined MBC at the dawn of Independence in 1964 where he served as Producer of several MBC flagship radio plays including Pamajiga and also produced and acted in Sewero la Sabata Ino where he was fondly called ‘A Kapalepale’.

The late Likhaya Mbewe retired from MBC in the late 90’s but remained part of the MBC family until his demise.

He is survived by nine children, 36 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren.
