Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regional governor for the South Charles Mchacha has refused to apologize to Member of Parliament for Mulanje West Patricia Kaliati and he has vowed to continue throwing insults at her.
During a public rally in Mulanje addressed by President Peter Mutharika, Mchacha told the rally that Mulanje Pasani legislator Angie Kaliati married a foolish woman.
In vernacular Mchacha said: “Ndaona pompano a Kaliati a amuna ali pompano taimani anthu akuoneni, nthawi zina munthu umatha kukwatira chitsiru chokumwa madzi ometera.”
The attack on the DPP director of women follows her endorsement of Vice-President Saulos Chilima as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2019 elections.
The remarks attracted strong condemnation from all corners with many demanding for an apology from Mchacha.
But reacting to the call, Mchacha said his duty is to protect President Mutharika by throwing insults at his critic.
Concurring with Mchacha’s remarks, DPP’s Secretary General Grezeldar Jeffrey said gender issues should not come in only when a man insults a woman.
“Gender issues work both ways; even when a woman insult a man,” she said.
Meanwhile Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has summoned Mchacha for the attack.
