Chakwera calls for Mutharika’s resignation over police fraud

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has called for the immediate resignation of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for being embroiled in a MK145 million corruption syndicate dubbed police-gate.

Chakwera said this in a media briefing held on Monday in the capital Lilongwe aimed at reacting to a leaked Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) exposing the plunder of public funds.

The report suggests that President Peter Mutharika might have benefitted from K145 million that a supplier allegedly deposited into a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) account that has the President as the sole signatory.

According to the report, businessman Zameer Karim was fraudulently awarded a K2.3 billion contract and he used the deal to defraud government of K466 million.

Speaking in an interview with the press Chakwera expressed shock over the matter.

“He must step down with immediate effect. What else can convince us that Mutharika is indeed the Prince & not the King of thieves? We must be resolute in whether we should continue to trust Mutharika and his cronies with our resources,” said Chakwera.

Chakwera said he believes the recent revelation of plunder is just a tip of the iceberg.

Meanwhile President Mutharika has distanced himself from the report, describing it as fake.
