Two arrested for being found in possession of medical drugs

Police are keeping in custody two men for being found in possession of medical drugs without a license which are believed to have been stolen at Tengani Health Facility in Nsanje District.

The suspects, identified as John Kefa, 44, and Mabvuto Frackson, 35, were arrested Tuesday at a snap roadblock at Alumenda, in Chikwawa which is close to Illovo gate along Blantyre-Chikwawa Road.

Nsanje Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Sergeant Agnes Zalakoma said while the Chikwawa counterparts were manning the roadblock, they intercepted a vehicle, Toyota Camry registration number LA 2003, which was heading towards Nchalo.

“While searching the vehicle, the police discovered a number of drugs which included 250 packets of Lumefantrine Artemether (LA), 1000 tablets of fragile and 56 boxes of malaria testing kits. The kits were in a large carton which had writings Tengani Health Centre,” she explained.

Zalakoma added that a Senior Medical Assistant at Tengani Health Centre, Benito Jedegwa had reported the missing of the said drugs and was suspecting that the facility’s Pharmacist, Paul Kaunda was behind the move.

The PRO said the said pharmacist is currently at large and the Police are trying their best to arrest him so that he answers charges ranging from theft by public servant and conspiracy to commit a felony.

“The arrested suspects will appear in court very soon to answer the charges leveled against them,” Zalakoma explained.

Kefa is from Sekeni Village while Frackson hails from Chikakuza both under the area of Paramount Chief Lundu in Chikwawa District.
