Chikwawa Man Handed 11 Year Jail Term for Raping a Rest House Cleaner

The First Grade Magistrate Court in Chikwawa district on Tuesday sentenced a 26-year-old man to eleven years in prison for raping a rest house worker.

State Prosecutor, George Hussein, told the court that London Christopher raped Agnes Galimoto on the night of 4 June this year at Chapananga Rest-house in Nchalo where the girl is said to have been a cleaner.

“On that night, London Christopher sneaked into the cleaner Agnes Galimoto’s house after the latter (Agnes) went out for a natural call.

“On her return, she noticed the accused in the house who immediately pounced on her and raped her on her bed,” narrated Hussein.

According to Hussein, Christopher fled the scene but was quickly apprehended by members of the public who subsequently handed him over to the law enforcers.

But during proceedings in court, Christopher denied any wrongdoing, prompting the state to parade three witnesses to incriminate him and was later found guilty as charged.

Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Gladstone Chirundu shared the state’s earlier submission for stiffer sentence, saying the crime was serious in nature.

Chirundu went on handing Christopher 11 year prison sentence as a measure to deter others from committing similar offences.

Christopher hails from Dolo Village in the area of Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa while Galimoto is from Ndanga Village in Traditional Authority Juma in Mulanje District.
