Mutharika’s niece spend a night in police cell

A niece to President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, Manice Hale has spent a night in police cell after her arrest on Tuesday at Kamuzu International Airport.

Manice, a naturalized American citizen of Malawian dissent is active on Facebook where she is known as Manice Abiti William Dawood.

Manice who is also United Transformation Movement (UTM) member was arrested at Lilongwe International Airport as she was about to board a flight back to USA where she works as a nurse.

According to information at hand, Manice who is yet to be charged is accused of insulting President Mutharika through her Facebook post.

Manice will appear in court today for formal charges and a possible bail application.

On Tuesday, police used teargas to disperse angry members of UTM gathered at Police Headquarters led by former First lady Callista Mutharika.
