Driver in Cooler over Death of Three Year Old Boy

Nkhunga Police in Nkhotakota have expressed worry over the increase in preventable road accidents that are claiming lives of many people in the district.

Nkhunga Police Station Public Relations Officer (PRO) Ignatius Esau said this Tuesday with reference to a recent incident that claimed life of a three year old boy.

Esau identified the deceased as Finodi Dafuleni Banda who lost his life after the vehicle in which him together with his parents were travelling in got involved in an accident along the Dwangwa-Nkhotakota M5 road.

According to the Police officer, 27year old Chikumbutso Chitumba was on August 20, 2018 driving a Toyota Sienta registration number BT 4715 from Nkhotakota to Dwangwa with six passengers on board including the deceased and his parents.

Upon reaching Liwaladzi as the driver was trying to overtake another motor vehicle, he pumped into a pothole and due to high speed, he eventually lost control of the vehicle.

“The impact resulted into the vehicle overturning twice before it stopped at the nearside and this resulted into the death of the toddler whereas five other passengers escaped with minor injuries,” he said.

The deceased hailed from Nthembwe village in Traditional Authority (TA) Mwase in Kasungu district.

The PRO has since appealed to drivers to avoid unnecessary overtaking and high speeding.

Meanwhile, the driver is in custody awaiting a charge of causing death by reckless or negligent driving that contravenes section 126 (4) c of the Road Traffic Act.
