Governor charged for killing pregnant student in Kenya

Kenyan governor, Zakariah Okoth Obado, has been charged for killing a 26 year old pregnant university student, Sharon Otieno, whom prosecutors say he was in an intimate relationship with.

The incident occurred on 3 September this year when she was abducted together with a local journalist.

According to Kenya’s National Prosecution Authority statement which was released on Twitter, her body was found a day later in a small town called Oyugis about 25 miles away by the roadside with stab wounds on both the mother and the unborn baby.

The journalist, Barack Oduor, fled and reported the case to police as per the said Twitter report.

The investigation also reveals that the Migori County governor was unhappy with Otieno’s 7 months pregnancy of which he is suspected of being responsible for, as per the authority’s chief Prosecutor, Noordin Haji.

It is believed that Obado’s personal assistants, Michael Oyamo and Caspal Ojwang Obiero, together with other unidentified men were involved in the murder of the girl and the unborn baby.

Oyamo and fellow assistant, Obiero were charged with murder earlier this month.

Obado, who got elected into power five years ago, appeared in court yesterday in the morning in which he pleaded not guilty.

The governor is still in custody, awaiting his bail application today.
