Zimbabwe Home Affairs Minister calls for peaceful demos

Minister of Home Affairs, Cain Mathema, has called for peace ahead of demonstrations planned by Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) against economic crisis in Zimbabwe.

The protests will be done today to show discontent in Emerson Mnangagwa’s Zanu PF regime which has led to a rise of cost of living, leading into an increase in prices of things.

In accordance with Newsday publications in Zimbabwe, Mathema addressed Journalist yesterday when he was touring Central Registry Headquarters, saying President Mnangagwa is a peace-loving person and people should hold peaceful demonstrations in return.

“Let me say that our President (Emmerson Mnangagwa) is a peace-loving person. If people go against the law and go to demonstrate, they must know that our law will deal with them harshly. We don’t want law breakers. We don’t want people who break our peace.” We are a law-abiding government and so is our President,” he said.

This comes after ZCTU vowed not to reverse the decision of going into the streets today after police banned the protests, citing fear of cholera outbreak that has struck Zimbabwe.

Japhet Moyo, ZCTU secretary general, refuted police’s command, saying they are working under protection of lawyers.

“We are going ahead as planned. We have instructed our lawyers to challenge (the police ban). We are very confident that we are going to exercise our rights as citizens and the police cannot determine or infringe on those rights like that,” he boldly said.
