Two females only identified as Miss. Grace Kamanga 10 of Mponda village TA Timbiri and Mrs Sofiana Chiumia 43 of Chapumbwa village TA Mkumbira both in Nkhata Bay District have died after being hit by a motor vehicle at Kawalazi turn off on Wednesday evening.
The driver Gilbert Kgang, a South African, was on December 12, 2018 driving a motor vehicle registration number NB1107 Toyota Hilux belonging to Strabag contractors from the main camp heading Mzuzu along Mzuzu – Nkhata Bay M5 road.
As he was approaching Kawalazi junction, he lost control of the vehicle and it eventually swerved to offside where it had to hit the victims who were at the bus stage.
Following the impact, the victims sustained multiple fractures, the driver escaped with minor bruises an and the car got extensively damaged.
The victims were taken to Nkhata Bay District Hospital where both pronounced dead upon arrival.
According to the medical practitioner, the two died due to the fractures and loss of blood.
The driver who is in police custody will soon appear in court to answer the charge of causing death by reckless driving.
Meanwhile police in the district are appealing to all road users to make sure that traffic rules are not violated .
