MEC truck captured offloading materials illegally in Karonga: Sam Alfandika trashes the rumours

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has quashed rumours hovering on the social media that one of its truck offloaded materials illegally before arriving at its destination at the Karonga District Council.

On Wednesday the social media was awash with photos of a truck registration number TPE 32 parked at Karonga Filling station with some broken MEC materials on the ground.

But in a statement released on Thursday, MEC Chief Elections Officer Sam Alfandika quashed the romours describing them as fake.

“The truth of the matter is that the van, registration number TPE32 successfully delivered material to the council on Saturday, December 29, 2018 ahead of the voter verification exercise scheduled to commence on January 5, 2019.

“On the way back the driver stopped at a Total Service Station to refuel the vehicle. While at the station a used seal dropped. Social media have speculated that the van was dropping out some materials illegally to the jeopardy of the ongoing electoral process,” wrote Alfandika.

He added: “The Commission is advising the general public to refrain from feeding the electorate with fake stories. All electoral stakeholders are encouraged to verify matters first before throwing in their weight behind such fake stories. 2 “

Meanwhile the credibility of the forthcoming May 21, 2019 tripartite election is at stake.
