High court dismisses Grezeldar Jeffrey’s K70 billion compensation

High Court in Lilongwe has dismissed a compensation claim of money totaling to K70 billion by the Democratic Progressive Party General Secretary Grezeldar Jeffrey and her other three friends in a case in which they were acquitted after being accused of a corruption.

This comes barely a year after the high court also rebuffed an application by the DPP Secretary which indicated that the Attorney General (AG) should be added as a party to a case in which they are claiming about K70 billion in compensation in June last year.

The GS and Brian Kachingwe, were seeking compensation for false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, loss of business and properties, breach of contract and defamation following their acquittal on charges of corruption alongside late Philip Kaphikire and late Brighton Chakhaza.

Jeffrey and Kachingwe were seeking the compensation alongside Agnes Kaphikire (as personal representative of Phillip Kaphikire) and Tadala Chakhaza (as personal representative of Brighton Chakhaza).

Judge Charles Mkandawire, made the ruling today, Monday, 14th January, 2019.

The case started way back in 2001, but Jeffrey and company were acquitted in 2011, after the long trial.
