Umodzi Party (UP) leader Professor John Chisi has urged Malawians to refrain from a culture of handouts as the country prepares for May tripartite elections saying this cannot take us anywhere.

He said there is no nation that developed where its citizens rely on hand outs that working.

“People need good roads, jobs, schools. Health facilities and skills in order for them to take part in national development not handouts,” he said.

On the same the new political party’s act bars politicians from making handouts.

Social and Political analysts Rafiq Hajat said the problem starts with politicians themselves during campaign.

He said this makes it difficult for them to convince the very same people to take part in national development when elections are over.
