Ras Chikomeni sues MEC, case to commence on February 18

The High court in Blantyre has set February 18 for an inter-partes hearing on presidential aspirant Ras Chikomeni David Chirwa’s demands.

Chirwa wants the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to extend time for him to sort out shortfalls in his presidential nomination papers.

MEC Chairperson, Justice Jane Ansah, rejected Chikomeni’s papers on Wednesday last week because he did not pay the K2 million nomination fee.

Ansah also accused Chikomeni of failing to get the required number of nominators in 19 districts of the country.

But speaking in an interview with the press, Ras Chikomeni said a public office is not meant to be sold to the citizens.

He accused the electoral body of favouring rich people.

Receiving of nomination papers from Presidential candidates ended on Friday last week and only 10 Presidential candidates managed to presents their nomination papers.
