Mutharika denies of having a hand in albino killings, accuses Chilima of funding APAM

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has come out of his cocoon to deny allegations implicating him of having a hand in the killings of albinos in the country, saying that is the work of his political opponents.

Two weeks ago the social media was flooded with an audio clip of man suspected an albino killer in one of the prisons mentioning President Mutharika, Presidential Advisor Hetherwick Ntaba and other Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) top officials of having a hand in albino killings in the country.

The suspect exposed how President Mutharika and other top gurus approached him through a Catholic Priest Father Muhosha to hunt for albino bones.

The audio clip attracted public attention with Humani Rights Defenders Coalition headed by Timothy Mtambo penning Mutharika to clear his name on the audio clip.

Speaking on Monday afternoon at State House when six of eight people were sworn is as commissioners of a Commission of Inquiry on Attacks, Abductions and Killings of Persons with Albinism, Mutharika distanced himself on the matter.

“We now have witnesses who are testifying that one UTM member, Mr. Bon Kalindo, connived with one prisoner in order to create a recording that formulates an impression that I was involved in the events we are complaining about. This malicious recording was circulated on social media with that malicious intent,” said Mutharika.

President Mutharika also accused United Transformation Movement (UTM) leader Saulos Chilima of funding the Association of Persons with Albinism (APAM) to fight his government.

“We have heard from credible sources that Dr. Soulos Chilima is funding APAM in order to engage in anti-Government activities. Chilima’s wishful dream is to distabilise my Government and hopes to come into power through the backdoor by using people with albinism,” said Mutharika.

The President also accused APAM President Overstone Kondowe of working with the opposition to bring anarchy in the country.

“We have seen APAM behaving very irrationally and suspiciously. Instead of joining Government to find solutions for their people, APAM has chosen to work with the Opposition to fight Government. APAM is now behaving like a political militant organisation.

“ As this country is my witness, I invited APAM to dialogue and they rudely refused. I proceeded to invite those persons with albinism of better understanding and they came.

He added: “Next, the same APAM who rudely refused to meet me started demanding that they want to camp a vigil at State House in order to meet me. To our surprise, Mr. Timothy Mtambo and Mr. Charles Kajoloweka took over the show only to abandon their people with albinism stranded in the rain, without food, without water, without shelter and without transport.

“As far as we are concerned, this inhuman and reckless violation of the rights of the people with albinism is nothing but criminal.”

Meanwhile UTM Spokesperson Dr. Chidanti Malunga has challenged the president to bring evidence.
