The death toll from floods and heavy rains has risen from 45 to 56 deaths while 577 people have injuries, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) has said.

Spokesperson for DODMA Chipiliro Khamula said on Tuesday that two people were missing following the floods and heavy rains.

He said about 739,790 people been displaced while 15,185 households have been displaced.

Khamula said 187 camps have been established to cater for the displaced people.

The floods and heavy rains have affected people in the districts of Nsanje, Chikwawa, Zomba, Mulanje, Thyolo, Chiradzulu, Phalombe, Blantyre, Neno, Mwanza, Balaka, Mangochi and Dedza.

A team of South African rescue experts is currently in Malawi to support and enhance relief operations.

On Tuesday the meteorological department warned of another possible occurrence of floods due to heavy rains from Thursday to Sunday in the southern parts of Malawi especially in Nsanje district.

Director of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, Jolamu Nkhokwe said this is due to an intense circular storm from Mozambique which will pass through Nsanje to Zimbabwe.
