MACRA donates K25 million towards flood relief

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has donated relief items worth K25 million and K5 million going into logistics for people affected by floods in Phalombe and Zomba Districts.

The regulatory body distributed, among other things, blankets, maize flour, soya pieces, plastic sheets and kitchen utensils.

MACRA director general Godfrey Itaye said his organisation was responding to the need that exists in the aftermath of the floods.

“As a responsible organisation, coupled with the State President’s declaration of state of disaster in areas affected by floods we thought it wise to address some of the needs of people affected by the floods,” Itaye said.

Department of Disaster Management Affairs’ (DoDMA) director of response and recovery, Harris Kachale said the donation will complement government’s effort towards providing relief assistance and alleviating the suffering of people affected by the floods.

Following the devastation, governments, world leaders, companies and individuals have been sourcing and handing out relief to those in need.

In a related development, Union College students from the United States of America have also donated towards the cause with much needed medical supplies amounting to K3 million.

The students said they felt the donation will go a long way in helping those in distress.

Over one thousand people in Thyolo, Nsanje and Phalombe Districts will benefit from the medical supplies.
