18-year-old boy drowns in Lake Malawi

MANGOCHI – 18-year-old boy identified as Dan Kyoma has died after drowning into Lake Malawi in Mangochi district, police say.

Deputy Public Relations Officer for Mangochi Police, Amina Tepani Daudi said the deceased went to swim on April 19, 2019 along with his younger brother and friend at Chimatiro fishing dock within Namiyasi area.

Daudi said the three went into the lake using Kyoma’s father’s canoe and that when they reached a deep point, the 18-year-old jumped into the lake to swim but he couldn’t swim.

“He was immediately swept away by a strong current and disappeared into deep water,” Daudi said.

She said the other two alerted fishermen who searched for the deceased but to no avail.

The matter was reported to Koche Police Unit and the body of the boy was found floating on Saturday afternoon by some fishermen.

Postmortem conducted at Mangochi District Hospital revealed that death was due to suffocation.

The deceased hailed from Ntanga Village in Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi.
