Nkhoma Synod Pastoral letter angers DPP govt

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government through the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology Henry Mussa has trashed the recent Pastoral letter released by the Nkhoma Synod of the CCAP describing the letter as unfair.

On Sunday, Nkhoma Synod released a pastoral letter which was read in its all churches appealing to its members to seek God’s guidance to choose a leader with great passion and reputation for service during the May 21 polls.

In the pastoral letter, the church leadership has highlighted issues such as Corruption, good governance and protection of Persons with Albinism as critical areas that need to be prioritized in the next administration.

The church urged its members to vote for leaders who will be able to deal with corruption and regionalism which has taken a center stage in the ruling DPP government led by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

The church also asked its members not to vote for leaders who will promote abortion and same sex marriages, saying this is sin against God.

“We, the clergy of CCAP Nkhoma Synod, encourage all voters to vote into power the one and only leader who has the above-listed leadership qualities as the President of the Republic of Malawi. The man with (a) good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom (Acts 6:3),” the letter concluded.

Reacting to the letter, Minister of Information Henry Mussa said the Synod should have engaged government first before issuing the letter.

Mussa regretted that the message in the letter was one of the many that criticise the Mutharika administration unfairly.

He said Malawi has faced plunder of public resources perpetrated by predecessor regimes, including the 31 years of single party rule of MCP.

He said DPP administration is currently prosecuting Cashgate suspects.

Meanwhile analysts have hailed the church for highlighting issues currently affecting Malawians.
