China Donates K220 Million, Hands Over 120,000 Bags of Rice

The Government of the People’s Republic of China on Wednesday, April 3 donated US$300,000 which is over MK220 million, for flood response operations and officially handed over a donation of 6,025 metric tonnes of rice which is about 120,500 bags each weighing 50kgs, through the Ministries of Homeland Security and Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Speaking in Lilongwe during the handover ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Malawi His Excellency Liu Hongyang assured Malawi Government of continued support.

“This is not the first time we are making a donation towards our brothers and sisters affected by floods. We have been there since a state of disaster was declared in the affected districts, on 8th March, 2019.” Said Hongyang.

In his remarks, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Emmanuel Fabiano said the assistance will significantly alleviate the challenges being faced by the affected people.

Homeland Security Minister Nicholas Dausi, who is also responsible for disaster management affairs, said the donations by the Chinese Government cannot be taken for granted.

“We will use the money to rebuild broken homes, all the people residing in camps will have to go back to their homes, soon,” said Dausi.
