Egenco donates Mk10 million to people affected by floods

The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) on Wednesday (3rd April, 2019) donated K10 million to help alleviate challenges people affected by floods are facing.

Speaking in Lilongwe during the cheque presentation ceremony Homeland Security Minister Nicholas Dausi, who is also responsible for disaster management affairs, commended EGENCO for the donation and assured the nation that the money will be put to good use.

“On behalf of President Arthur Peter Mutharika and the Malawi Government, I would like to thank you so much for your support. The donation will go a long way in alleviating challenges people are facing across the affected districts.

“Be assured that every penny will be used for the intended purpose and will be accounted for,” said Dausi, who also appealed for more support from well-wishers to support response operations.

In his remarks, EGENCO Chief Executive Officer William Liabunya said they felt duty bound to support government’s efforts in assisting the affected people.

“As you may be aware, we lost about 270 megawatts (MW) of hydro generation capacity against available capacity of 320 MW during the floods. As a preventive measure, we had to stop all machines at major power stations due to flooding and excessive debris.

“After recovering, we thought for the plight of the affected people and decided to donate K10 million to assist them,” said Liabunya.
