Police arrest one of their own for theft

Police in the Southern Region have arrested one of their own on allegations of obtaining money under false presence.

National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera in a telephone interview confirmed the development but could not give more details as the case was in court as we went to press.

Kadadzera said it has been alleged that Hannah Kabwazi obtained the money from people using the names of other senior Police officers.

At the time of going to press, she was appearing at the Magistrate Court in Zomba.

Obtaining money by false pretences contrary to section 319 of the penal code.

Calls to Zomba Police Public Relations Officer Patricia Sipliano could not go through as her mobile was not available.

Information reaching local press shows Kabwazi, a Police Officer at Soche Police in Blantyre is reported to have obtained a loan under on the pretext that she had been sent by a senior Police officer based in Zomba and that the money would be paid within the month of April.

The money, in the sum of K103,000, was obtained from Sammy Aaron by virtue that she had been instructed by a Sergeant Malunga.

Malunga is a Police Service Officer from Thondwe station in Zomba.

According to paperwork seen by online punblication, Kabwazi was a signatory of the loan as a witness.

Whe Aaron tried to reclaim his money Malunga, he feigned ignorance of the loan.

Upon reporting the matter Police, Kabwazi was arrested.

A telephone call to Kabwazi’s mobile number was answered by a person who identified herself as the sister and denied the allegation, saying she was in the hospital.

She denied to give her name but said Kabwazi would on Friday.
