Two Malawians injured in Xenophobia attack in South Africa, 300 displaced

Two Malawians have been injured while 300 others have been displaced in the ongoing Xenophobia attack in Durban, South Africa.

Minister of Information and Communications Technology Henry Mussa has confirmed of the development in a statement released on Monday made available to faceofmalawi reporter.

According to Mussa, no Malawian has died in the ongoing xenophobia attack which started on March 25, 2019.

“As of today, 1st April 2019, no Malawian has died arising from the attacks that have been taking place mainly in Durban since 25th March, 2019. So far, 2 Malawians have been confirmed injured while some 300 are displaced.

“The Malawi Mission in South Africa has visited the affected Malawians and engaged the South African authorities to guarantee the safety of our people,” reads in part the statement.

He added: “Our Mission is also consulting on voluntary return of 105 Malawians who will be sponsored by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

“Government is doing everything that is possible to secure the safety and welfare of all our citizens. We will continue to update the nation on this matter.”

Meanwhile South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the attack.
