Misa Malawi Chapter Ask Authorities to Protect Rights of Journalists’

As the world is commemorating press freedom day, Media Institute of Sourthen Africa (MISA) Malawi Chapter has called on authorities in the country to protect journalists’ from assaults.

This has been said by Misa Malawi Chapter Chairperson Teresa Ndanga in a press statement released today.

Ndanga, in the press statement has called on authorities to take action on people who assault journalists for merely doing their job.

She has further appealed to journalists in the country to remain professional and strong in promoting and defending democracy.

Reads part of the statement: “MISA Malawi also calls on media practitioners to be professional and strong in promoting and defending democracy.”

“As we reflect on challenges affecting the sector, including ‘fake news’ or
‘disinformation,’ we should also reflect on how professional journalism could counter disinformation and help nurture our hard won democracy, more especially this time as the country gears up to May 21, 2019 elections,” reads the statement.

Activities marking the day will be held in Mzuzu, starting this afternoon with a workshop on data journalism.

The climax of the activities will take place tomorrow with a press freedom walk and gala night to award outstanding journalists. w
