Two EU Election Observers robbed Mk1 million in Chikwawa

Information reaching faceofmalawi indicates that two European Union (EU) Election observers in the forthcoming May 21 tripartite election have been robbed money amounting to Mk1 million and other items in Chikwawa.

Police in Chikwawa have confirmed of the development and identified the victims as Mario Orru aged 51and Mrs Slavena Lieva aged 40 from Bulgeria.

According to police, the two met their fate on Sunday night at lodge called Memories Lodge.

“On Sunday 12th may 2019 at about 0200 hrs while they were fast asleep in respective rooms, a group of unknown armed criminals who disguised themselves in masks and blue work suits, broke into the lodge compound by breaking the rear compound door.

“Then used unknown object to open room 105. three criminals demanded cash from the reporter but resisted to surrender. In the process, one criminal used a machete like object which he cut the reporter at back head and lower lip, he lost blood in the process and the criminals stole the following items,” reads part the statement.

The suspects went away with cash amounting to MK 1,300,000, two cellphones and a laptop, according to the police.

As this was not enough, the armed thugs also block into the room of Mrs Slavena Lieva where they stole cash amounting to $500.

EU observer team to Malawi also confirmed of the development in a statement made available to faceofmalawi reporter.

“We can confirm that one of our observer teams was the victim of a robbery at their accommodation, and some money and personal items were stolen. It happened in the early hours of 12 May in Chikwawa.

“One of the team members sustained some injuries which have now been treated and he has been discharged from hospital,” reads in part the statement.

Added the statement: “Both of the affected observers are in Blantyre for the time-being.”

Meanwhile police have launched a manhunt for the suspected armed thugs.
