Dausi sues Chilima for implicating him in MEC warehouse torching

Minister of Homeland Security Nicholas Dausi has sued United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Saulosi Chilima for defamation over the 2014 MEC warehouse torching allegations made against Dausi.

Chilima made the during a campaign rally in Chitipa where he alleged that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika are behind the missing of CCTV cameras at Malawi Electoral Commission.

The Vice President said that he was not surprised that the people broke into MEC warehouse in the capital Lilongwe and went away with CCTV Cameras because it is the same DPP led by Nicholas Dausi that set ablaze MEC Warehouse in 2014.

Chilima went further to challenge Dausi to sue him if he wants.

Then on Wednesday Dausi through his lawyer Frank Mbeta filed for lawsuit against Chilima over the matter.

Mbeta said that though the Vice President may be immune on matters affecting his office, the charges levelled against him in this case do not affect the office hence the need for him to be answerable.

In the summons, Chilima is being asked to file defence within 28 days or state within 14 days if he will not enter defence.

Special Assistant to Chilima, Milward Tobias, said that Chilima is yet to be served with the court documents.

“We will comment after we have seen what we have been charged with,” Tobias said.

Meanwhile the lawsuit has attracted mixed reactions among Malawians considering the fact that this is a campaign period.
