No Foreign Barristers to Represent UTM in the Elections Case

Date:

Reports reaching FaceofMalawi indicates that there are no foreign barristers that have been hired by United Transformation Movement (UTM) to represent the party in the elections case.

This has been said by Dr. Chikosa Sulungwe who is leading the team of lawyers representing UTM’s presidential candidate Dr. Saulos Chilima in the case.

Sulungwe said that there are no foreign barristers who are joining them in the case.

“Maybe the other parties in the case may want to hire foreign barristers, but our team has not received any instructions that we may be joined by foreign barristers,” said Sulungwe.

Sulungwe’s comment came in following stories that washed social media in the [past few days that UTM has hired foreign barristers to help the party fight Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on the May 21 elections which are said to have a lot of irregularities.

Following the anomalies that May 21 elections had, Chilima, on his behalf and on behalf of his UTM filed an election petition in the high court seeking the nullification of the presidential elections results.

Despite the numerous irregularities which included ‘tippex’ being used on some results sheets to alter numbers fro the results candidates, MEC went ahead to announce President Peter Mutharika the winner of May 21 elections.
