Mzuzu City Council losing half a million daily in revenue

In an Interview with YFM, Mzuzu City Council Spokesperson McDonald Gondwe said at the moment the council is collecting daily market fees from three sections of the market out of 15 sections.

He said most vendors are boycotting market fees especially those who are plying their business in the Central Business District because their fellow vendors trading alongside the streets are not paying market fees.

Gondwe added that currently the city is collecting K10, 000 per day as opposed to K350, 000 to K500, 000 per day a situation which has paralyzed most activities of the Council.

But Gondwe has revealed that soon the city council officials will conduct a round table meeting with the vendor’s leadership to find long lasting solutions to the problem.

He said among others the meeting will also be a crucial platform to persuade vendors to patronize the Flea Market which has been sidelined by most traders in the city.

Recently Mzuzu City Council made a deal with Mzuzu Police Station to force out all vendors trading in undesignated places but the initiative did not yield the desired results.
