MEC official suspected of transferring Chilima’s name to Likoma to appear in court

Information sourced by faceofmalawi indicates that Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) official accused of transferring former Vice President Saulos Chilima’s name on a voter register from Lilongwe to Likoma will appear in court on July 9, 2019.

National Police spokesperson, James Kadadzera confirmed of the development in an interview with the press and identified the suspect as Frank Kampango.

According to Kadadzera , the suspect is currently on bail and investigations are currently underway to establish the motive behind the transfer.

The arrest of Kampango came barely hours after Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah’s exclusive interview with Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) where she was quizzed over the matter.

Ansah only said the matter is in the hands of police.

Chilima nearly failed to cast his vote on May 21 after his name went missing on the voters role and it took the intervention of MEC Chief Elections Officer Sam Alfandika.

It was later discovered that Chilima’s name was transferred to Likoma without his knowledge.
