Malaria Stories Art Exhibition Set to be Launched

In a quest to fight malaria, musicians Code Sangala and Annemarie Quinn are set to officially open the exhibition of art under their initiative Music against Malaria.

The initiative which continues to make strides using art in the fight against malaria the official opening is expected to take place on Saturday at Jacaranda Cultural Center (JCC) in Blantyre.

The two musicians, who are running the Music against Malaria as a non-governmental organisation, have been hosting different music to disseminate messages about the dangers of malaria to raise funds to support the pediatric ward at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.

The initiative is now targeting various hospitals in the country.

Annemarie, who is from the United Kingdom and teaches music at Jacaranda School for Orphans at Chigumula in Blantyre, said Thursday they were excited to open the Malaria Stories Art Exhibition.

She said Music against Malaria and Art Malawi are in partnership for the art exhibition to raise awareness and funds for Chikwawa District Hospital Pediatric A&E Department.

“Our vision is to help eradicate malaria while preserving and supporting Malawi’s cultural heritage. Malaria Stories Art Exhibition is a platform to spread behavior change messages for malaria prevention and early testing,” Annemarie said.

The singer and guitarist, who is working on an album and has collaborated with some local acts, said even though malaria is a preventable and treatable disease, it still continues to pose a serious threat to the lives of people in the country.

“There will be so much on the night. We have an evening where we will display works from five local Malawian artists, all inspired by real life malaria stories collected by Music against Malaria, ranging from local tales to research wards,” she said.

During the opening, Annemarie will share the stage alongside Code and Agorosso.

Code said he will continue to fight malaria as he was once attacked by the disease and that he nearly died.

“We will continue to use music as well as other art forms to disseminate messages about malaria and we are glad to give people the Stories of Malaria Art Exhibition,” Code said.

Annemarie said the paintings would be up for sale on the day and that the exhibition will run until July 13 2019.

Some of the artists set to be part of the exhibition are Gilbert Mpakule, Hamilton Kameza, Kondwani Hara, Taz and William Chikomo.

Recently, Music against Malaria also held a Tour-in-A-Day in schools in Blantyre, which saw them raise close to half a million to support Chikwawa District Hospital Pediatric A&E Department.
