‘MCP Legislators are failing their responsibility’ – Nankhumwa

Leader of government in parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa has expressed sadness with the behavior of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) parliamentarians in the august house.

Speaking on Monday, Nankhumwa said what MCP legislators are doing is uncalled off behavior citing that they need to act as mature people.

Nankhumwa remarks came in following the denial of MCP legislators to comment on the State of Nation Address by President Peter Mutharika on Friday during the opening of parliament.

“What the MCP members are doing is unfortunate and laughable. This is so because there is a government in place which the opposition members will be asking for developmental projects soon,” said Nankhumwa.

He, however added that the house does not give standing orders forcing Member of Parliament to comment on such matters unless proper procedures have been followed.

“There is no provision in standing orders to push members to comment on issues in the house unless business committee meets and agrees on way forward,” said Nankhumwa.

Earlier, MCP Chief Whip, MP for Lilongwe Central Robin Lowe told the house will not be responding to the SONA as they do not recognize President Mutharika.

“We will not respond to the SONA because our party does not recognize the DPP leader, President Peter Mutharika as legitimate president of Malawi. We will be deliberating in Parliament because we have a budget to discuss and pass,” said Lowe.

MCP legislators through their leader Lazarus Chakwera are questioning the presidency of Mutharika who has been labeled as Tipp-Ex President.
