Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Reverend Lazarus Chakwera has welcomed 18 independent Members of Parliament into the party boosting its number of legislators in the August house to 73 from 55.
The ceremony of welcoming the legislators took place at Kaliyeka Primary School ground in Lilongwe on Sunday.
In his remarks Chakwera, told the newly joined MCP members to feel at home and be willing to work with the party for the betterment of the country.
“We welcome you back to the party. We wanted to make sure that the public also welcome you for rejoining MCP,” he said.
Addressing MCP supporters, Chakwera encouraged them to keep taking part in the demonstrations that the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) are organizing calling for resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson Jane Ansah and all MEC commissioners for mismanaging May 21 tripartite elections.
May 21 elections were marred by irregularities such as the use of Tipp-Ex.
“You must not relent,” said Chakwera.
Meanwhile, electoral case which Chakwera is the second petitioner is scheduled to start on July 29, 2019.
