Elections Case Update: AG Requests for Adjournment

Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale has requested a six day adjournment to allow him and his team to read and understand new materials served on his table from the 1st petitioner, United Transformation Movement (UTM) leader Saulosi Chilima.

According to kaphale, the new material was served before the trial hence the request for adjournment.

“The lawyers of Malawi Electoral Commission will not enter into the heads of the lawyers for applicants, they must read the files to understand this,” said Kaphale.

However, lawyers representing Malawi congress party (MCP) have argued that adjournment of the case would be unnecessary, suggesting that trial of the case should start by Friday august 9, 2019.

Justice Healey Potani who is chairing a panel of five judges said the court will give determination on the AG’s application from 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon.

Judge Potani also hinted that the trial will only last for 12 days.

Meanwhile the court has since adjourned for a lunch break.
