The irony and misfortunes befalling the once admired singer-songwriter, R. Kelly, have taken on a new twist as the woman who made money available to bond him out of jail after he was hit with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, is back in court, demanding for a payback.
Valencia Love made the payment of $100,000 in four batches of $25,000 in February, making it possible for the embattled singer to be released after he spent three nights behind bars. Love, however, wants her money back after federal charges were levelled against the singer.
Attorney Michael Avenatti made a videotape available to the Chicago State prosecutors which showed R. Kelly having sex with an underage girl. This is besides the 11 sexual abuse charges that were brought against him in the month of May alone, in Chicago.
When Love posted the bail for R. Kelly, she received a lot of online bashing with her businesses suffering some forms of attacks by Kelly protesters after she said he was a ‚Äúgentleman: in their interactions,‚ÄĚ reports The Source.
Among the few businesses she owns in the Chicago area, Love also owns Lord and Child Christian Day Care Center and the Love on the Blu Cafe. She was stated to be a friend of the troubled singer.
A judge, Lawrence Flood, has, however, already ruled that she will not receive her money back immediately, with the possibility of not at all, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
‚ÄúThere‚Äôs a certain risk that a surety has in signing a bond slip on behalf of someone in custody. She took that risk,‚ÄĚ Flood said, according to local public radio station WBEZ.
In July, Kelly was arrested on charges out of Northern District of Illinois and the Eastern District of New York. The charges in those two cases include child pornography, obstruction of justice and sex trafficking.
Love gave a statement to Fox 32 News a little after she bonded the singer out, explaining her decision to put up the money.
‚ÄúI‚Äôm not going to say it was my money or his money, and he‚Äôs not broke,‚ÄĚ she stated. ‚ÄúHe was going to post bond by Thursday anyway. He‚Äôs my friend and I knew he needed help. There are three sides to every story, his side, theirs and the truth. ‚Ķ As a friend, if he says he‚Äôs innocent, I can only believe that he is innocent.‚ÄĚ
Love’s attorney is now saying that his client was unaware of the federal charges, hence her u-turn on the decision to post bail for him.
Love has refused to divulge where the money for Kelly’s bond came from, but claimed the singer would have been freed eventually, even if it wasn’t with her help.
‚ÄúI‚Äôm not going to say it was my money or [Kelly‚Äôs] and he‚Äôs not broke. He‚Äôs my friend and I knew he needed help,‚ÄĚ she told Fox32 News.
